Movie #1 : Warm Bodies

Eeek! First post! I am so excited to be writing about a movie that I have always wanted to see but unfortunately was never on the right streaming platforms until now. Warm Bodies is a movie I watched with my sister a few nights ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am not sure if my sister did, but I don't care.

Warm Bodies is a 2013 movie directed by Johnathan Levine. This is based on the novel "Warm Bodies" by Isaac Marion. I actually did not know there was a book until I did background research, so I will definitely be getting a copy!

The story is set during the zombie apocalypse and follows the internal monolog of a zombie who wants to be more. While hunting for human brains, he finds a group of teenagers searching for medicine to bring back to their human colony. The zombie makes eye contact with Julie, one of the teenagers, and is instantly infatuated. But, he is still hungry and in true zombie fashion eats the brain of another teenager. During this, he is able to gain the memory of this teen, Perry, and learns that Perry is Julie's boyfriend. The zombie then takes Julie with him, back to the airport where he currently resides in order to save her from the other zombies. Julie names the zombie R and they form an unlikely friendship. There is the age-old question of whether or not zombies and humans can be friends or even more.

The story continues with the weird love story that happens between them. I don't want to write too much about the story as I don't want to give any spoilers to those who might want to see it. But I truly thought this was a beautiful movie. Many people, including my sister, would not agree with me on this but I think it shows how love really conquers all, maybe even the undead. I was actually tearing up at times watching because there was more to the story than just love between two teens, it also showed how humans come together to help each other heal.

Of course, this movie had comedy which balanced out the drama that ensued which I really enjoyed. R's best friend M served as comedic relief with also his own journey to becoming human. The characters in this film were all fully formed and each of the actors played them well. Credits to the makeup department as well for doing an amazing job of making R look undead. Also, I am a huge fan of the lead actor, Nicholas Hoult who can be found in other projects such as "The Menu" and "The Great". He is a British actor that does a very convincing American accent.

My favorite scene from the movie was when R snuck into the human colony to see Julie. Julie lives in a grand house with a balcony. In Romeo and Juliet fashion, he called out to her, rather in more grunts than the original rose monolog. When doing research I found out the novel was a Romeo and Juliet-esque which makes a lot of sense looking back. I love a great star-crossed lover's tale!

This movie was a beautiful mash-up of drama, comedy, and apocalypse and I loved every minute of it. I recommend it to teenage audiences like myself and those willing to have a laugh. It is currently on Netflix if you would like to watch it. Thank you so much!!
