TV Show #1 : Insecure
All I have to say is that Issa Rae is probably one of the most talented people in media today. She started off with her web series, "Awkward Black Girl", then transformed it into a fantastic show called "Insecure". She recently starred in the "Barbie" movie as President Barbie and she was flawless in it. She can be hilarious on screen while also delivering heart felt moments. She can truly do it all. I am really excited to see what is next in store for Issa.
"Insecure" follows Issa Dee as she navigates being 29 while also stuck in a relationship that's not working and at a job that is unfulfilling. Her boyfriend, Lawrence, is struggling to regain confidence after his tech app failed and it puts strain on the relationship. Issa heavily relies on her best friend Molly for stability and advice. Molly, a big-time lawyer, has a hard time being appreciated at her job and finding a man who will be able to give her what she wants. Molly and Issa met at college *cough* STANFORD *cough* and have two other friends Kelly and Tiffany. Kelly is hilarious and is probably my favorite character in the show. She might be all laughs but deep down, she will always be there for her girls. Tiffany is in a happy relationship with her husband, Derek, who is probably the best man on the show. Tiff is very fashionable; I relate to her in so many ways. The show follows all these characters, mostly from the perspectives on Molly and Issa, as they grow and change into better versions of themselves.
I will say there were times when I was made at Issa and Molly. Their relationship was tumultuous at times but ultimately the most important relationship to both of them. I really enjoyed watching a show about two adult best female friends who are constantly there for each other, but they are not perfect. This show is able to perfectly articulate what female friendships are like and how important they are. It was amazing to see, as a young woman, that female friendships can last throughout your life and be the most important people in your life.
The show also has some more serious topics as well. Almost all of the people in this show are black and the incorporates themes that involve racism in the workplace, being stopped by the police, gentrification, and more. It also covers topics such as homophobia and biphobia, and misogyny. It does so in a realistic way, in ways that I have seen in real life. While jokes usually follow these moments, they do leave the viewer wondering.
I did not want to say too much about the plot because I want the future viewers to go through the experience as they watch the show. Watching "Insecure" feels like you are actually a part of these people's lives. You are also able to see the internal monologues of the characters which allows you to truly know what is going on in their heads. This show is unique, and I love it so much. I could definitely rewatch it.
So, if you are looking for a feel-good show that will help feel good about struggling in your late twenties, totally watch this. Even if you are younger like me or older, I feel that this show will appeal to anyone. It's an HBO show but all five seasons are currently on Netflix. Yvonne Orji, who played Molly, recently did an interview talking about becoming Molly and meeting the real-life Molly (Issa's real life best friend). It is on HBO, so I recommend checking that out as well!
