Movie #5 : Booksmart

I rewatched this movie by going to France and seeing it on Netflix. I was so happy that "Booksmart" was on it because it got taken off Hulu and I had been dying for a rewatch. It has tons of the new Hollywood seen that I am so excited to see in future movies. "Booksmart" was directed by Olivia Wilde, and I do not care if you think she is controversial for dating Harry Styles, she did an amazing job on this movie, and I hope she does it again because "Don't Worry Darling" was not it. Maybe because she casted Harry Styles.

In this 2019 coming of age movie, Amy, played by Kaitlyn Dever, and Molly, played by Beanie Feldstein, are two best friends who have studied all throughout high school to get in Ivy League colleges. Once they achieved that, they felt as though they had done the right thing by not partying to focus on school. But they soon found out that they are not the only ones going to good colleges. They realize that all the kids who partied throughout high school are ending up in the same places as them. So, they have one more night before graduation to party.

As I was saying, this movie has an insane cast. Not only starring Dever and Feldstein, Molly Gordon, Austin Crute, Billie Lourd, Skyler Gisondo, Mason Gooding, Noah Galvin, Eduardo Franco, and Nico Hiraga. Not to mention my favorite Diana Silvers. These up and comers star alongside adults like Lisa Kudrow, Jessica Williams, and Jason Sudeikis. Of course, pre-divorce from Wilde. Some find that movies with huge casts like these are too complicated to keep track of and is just one big cameo. But I personally loved it because it felt like going to the high school of new Hollywood. Also, as a rewatch a few years later, it is crazy to see where all of these stars have gone in just a few short years.

Another aspect of this movie that I loved was Amy's entire character. She is a lesbian working on getting her first anything with a girl. She has a huge crush on a girl but is often too shy to talk to her. Amy eventually gets involved with someone, but it is painfully awkward. I loved Amy because I related to her in so many ways. It is very hard to make the first movie, especially being into the same gender because you not only have to go through the process of do they like you, its do they like girls. Amy was perfectly awkward in a way that was genuine and real.

Molly's character was a bit more annoying, I will say, but I think that was the point. She was made to represent all the people in high school who think they are holier-than-thou because they only study and get into amazing schools. Molly as a person evolved which I loved to see because it was not only good for the people around her, but also for herself. I think that when she goes to college, she will have a fun time.

I really recommend this movie to high school girls who want to see themselves represented in their awkward phase right before they go through one of the biggest changes of their lives. You are guaranteed to laugh and have a good time.
