Movie #18: Austenland

KERI RUSSELL KERI RUSSELL KERI RUSSELL I LOVE YOUUUU

Recently, as a fan of Keri Russell after watching "The Diplomat" (I will watch "Felicity" eventually), I decided to watch this movie. I saw it on Hulu and thought, why not.

Directed by Jerusha Hess, one of the co-creators of the infamous "Napoleon Dynamite", in 2013, Austenland follows a Jane Austen fan, creatively named Jane, as she deals with her romantic despair by purchasing an immersion Jane Austen-themed experience at Austenland. There she meets the wild, yet kind Miss Elizabeth Charming, played by Jennifer Coolidge. With Elizabeth, Jane struggles through the imaginary world of Jane Austen, unable to tell what is real and what is not. Jane meets two men: a Mr. Darcy-esque man Mr. Nobley and a stableman Martin. Deciding between the two, unknowning which love in genuine, Jane must learn what real love is beyond the Austen novels in order to be satisfied.

I will not spoil who she ends up with, but trust that you will not be upset. As a "Pride and Prejudice" fan, I found myself relating to Jane more than I would have liked. I understand the desperation for companionship and the desire to be persued. The Austen books create this idea of romance and yearning that many people find themselves searching for. And you know what? Hell yeah.

No, I will not tell you to settle or be realistic because why should you?? Now, no one is perfect that I am sure of, but I believe you can be perfect for someone else. You can find your other have. Someone to be the Darcy (gender neutral #staywoke) to your Elizabeth. Many people say movie style love is unattainable and I do not agree. Search for the love that is consuming and passionate, but meanwhile soothing and assuring. One should have to make sacrifices in order to get the love they deserve.

The protagonist is a create example of this. By the end of the movie, she is disillusioned with the idea of storybook romance and gives up. Yet does love find her? Of course! While this is scripted, I think someone out there has scripted the perfect love story for you.

Production wise, the movie is a 2010s movie. Coolidge is phenomenal as usual and adds so much joy and comedy to the film. The costumes in Austenland are so adorable, I wish I could wear them. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was a cute rom-com that gives single people hope. Loved it!

Now, would I pay my savings to do an immersion like this? Tbh maybe...
